Vladimir Putin’s recent remarks in Moscow were widely interpreted as a direct response to a controversial post by Donald Trump, which sparked anger in Russia. During his annual Victory Day speech, Putin emphasized Russia’s pivotal role in defeating Nazi Germany, asserting that the Soviet Union "determined the outcome" of World War II. This statement came days after Trump suggested that the United States had singlehandedly won both world wars.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, "We won both wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance." However, Putin, standing alongside China’s President Xi Jinping in Moscow’s Red Square, countered by reminding the crowd that the Soviet Union had borne the brunt of enemy attacks and that its citizens had defended the front lines. His comments were seen as a clear rebuttal to Trump’s statement, which was perceived as dismissive of Russia’s enormous wartime sacrifice.
During the conflict, at least 27 million Soviet soldiers and civilians lost their lives. Putin vowed that Russia would never allow the "true victors over Nazism" to be slandered and promised to continue fighting what he described as "followers of Nazism"—a term the Kremlin has often used to justify its invasion of Ukraine. While acknowledging the contributions of the United States and European nations, he stressed that Russia’s sacrifices would never be forgotten or minimized.
This year’s Victory Day parade marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and was attended by over 20 world leaders aligned with Moscow, including Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The presence of Xi Jinping was seen as a powerful signal of the strengthening ties between Russia and China, even as both nations face efforts from the West to isolate them.
The parade featured thousands of soldiers marching through Red Square, with tanks, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and drones—some of which had been used in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The event took place under heightened security, amid reports of drone attacks near the Ukrainian border in Belgorod just days before the parade.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that leaders attending the event could not expect guaranteed safety, referring to the celebration as a "parade of cynicism." Despite these concerns, the parade proceeded without incident, concluding with Putin and other leaders laying red flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
