King Charles III Sparks MAGA Outrage by Affirming Canada’s Sovereignty Amid Trump’s Expansionist Rhetoric
King Charles III of the United Kingdom has drawn ire from the MAGA world after firmly asserting that Canada will remain “strong and free”—a clear rebuttal to Donald Trump’s repeated, jingoistic suggestions that Canada should become the “51st state” of the United States.
And the king didn’t stop there.
Addressing the Canadian Parliament on its opening day, Charles declared, “The ‘True North’ is indeed strong and free.” Though largely ceremonial, the British monarch serves as Canada’s nonpartisan head of state, while actual power rests with the prime minister and Parliament.
“Every time I come to Canada, a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream and from there straight to my heart,” the king said warmly.
He went on to praise the nation’s character: “I’ve always had the greatest admiration for Canada’s unique identity, recognized globally for its bravery, its defense of core democratic values, and the compassion and diversity of its people.”
Although Charles never directly mentioned Donald Trump, many viewed parts of his speech as a thinly veiled critique of the former U.S. president.
“Canada faces another critical moment,” the king said. “Democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination, and freedom are values Canadians hold dear—and ones this government is determined to protect.”
Those exact values—democracy, pluralism, and rule of law—are under increasing threat from Trump, whose record is that of an authoritarian, a xenophobe, a convicted felon, and a would-be autocrat with imperialist ambitions.
The king’s comments arrive amid Trump’s aggressive and economically damaging trade war with Canada. His administration imposed 25% tariffs on numerous Canadian goods, with similar policies targeting Mexico.
“We must face reality: since the Second World War, our world has never been more dangerous and unstable. Canada is confronting challenges that are unprecedented in our lifetimes,” Charles cautioned. He acknowledged that many Canadians feel a deep sense of anxiety over the rapidly changing global landscape.
Although the speech was largely drafted by the Canadian government, King Charles was permitted to include personal remarks—subtle yet powerful statements that reinforced the unity between Canada and the Crown against American encroachment and MAGA-style nationalism.
