Trump and Putin Clash in War of Words Amid Escalating Conflict in Ukraine

Former President Donald Trump has launched into a fiery tirade against Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him “absolutely CRAZY” in a social media post. The Kremlin quickly fired back, accusing Trump of suffering from “emotional overload” as he struggles with the pressure of peace negotiations in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed Trump’s outburst, attributing the remarks to heightened tensions. “These statements are linked to emotional overload. This is a decisive moment, and emotions are running high,” Peskov said.

Trump, who has repeatedly claimed he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of returning to office, lashed out online. “I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” he wrote.

He condemned the latest wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine, adding, “Missiles and drones are being shot into cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever… If Putin wants to conquer all of Ukraine, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!” He also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing him of harming his own country with his rhetoric.

The Kremlin's rebuttal followed one of the most intense aerial assaults of the war. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched a staggering 355 drones on Sunday night, after a previous attack involving 298 drones and 69 missiles.

Zelensky called the strikes politically motivated, lacking clear military objectives. “Only a sense of complete impunity can allow Russia to carry out such attacks and continually escalate their scale,” he said. “There is no significant military logic to this, but there is considerable political meaning.” He urged for tighter international sanctions, stating, “Russia's desire to fight must be deprived of resources.”

Despite the aggression, Peskov insisted diplomacy remains on the table. “While there is no understanding of the location and timing of the next round of talks with Kyiv, it is necessary to prepare for it,” he said.

Peskov confirmed that the prisoner swap deal brokered in Istanbul was still being implemented. Over the weekend, Russia and Ukraine exchanged more than 1,000 prisoners, including 303 soldiers on Sunday alone, according to Russia’s defense ministry.

He also claimed recent Russian strikes were retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil ahead of Victory Day on May 9. “Foreign leaders witnessed Kyiv's attempts to strike Russian territory. These attempts continue,” Peskov said.

Peskov acknowledged that backchannel communication with Washington is ongoing but downplayed expectations. “There are contacts between the special services of the Russian Federation and the United States, but it is too early to talk about large-scale cooperation,” he said.

In a separate jab at the West, Peskov mocked British media for suggesting Russian involvement in a suspected arson attack at Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s residence. “London is inclined to suspect Moscow of involvement in everything bad that is happening in Britain. This is ridiculous,” he said.

Peskov also confirmed President Putin would soon meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

While Trump has made bold threats of sweeping sanctions against Russia, he has yet to act on them. Meanwhile, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that new sanctions are imminent, calling the latest strikes on Kyiv “totally appalling.”
