The disgraced D.C. police lieutenant who betrayed his oath by tipping off Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio about an ongoing investigation—and then lied to federal agents—is finally facing consequences. Shane Lamond has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
But there’s more to the story.
Lamond, formerly a lieutenant in the Metropolitan Police Department, was convicted last year of obstructing justice and making false statements to federal authorities—three times. His misconduct came to light after it was revealed he warned Tarrio of an arrest warrant related to the vandalism of a Black Lives Matter banner. At the time, Tarrio led the Proud Boys, an extremist, far-right militia with fascist roots.
When questioned, Lamond tried to downplay their communications as “one-sided.” Prosecutors, however, showed compelling evidence that their contact was frequent, increasingly secretive, and escalated as law enforcement intensified efforts to apprehend Tarrio.
Tarrio was arrested on January 4, 2021—just two days before the violent January 6 insurrection—and was ordered to leave D.C. Though he wasn’t physically at the Capitol, his influence loomed large. Tarrio was later convicted of seditious conspiracy and sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the attempted coup.
In a stunning and deeply disturbing move, Donald Trump pardoned Tarrio after reclaiming the presidency—an act that flies in the face of justice and the rule of law.
