Madeleine Dean Destroys MAGA Tariff Logic: ‘We Cannot Build Bananas in America!’

During a recent hearing, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean sharply challenged Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick after he made the absurd suggestion that companies should “build” bananas in America to avoid tariffs. Dean quickly pointed out the obvious: “We cannot build bananas in America!”

Lutnick’s comments were baffling. Dean asked about the tariff on bananas, noting how much Americans love them and buy billions annually. Lutnick replied that the tariff reflects the countries producing the bananas, usually around 10%. Dean noted that Walmart had already raised banana prices by 8% due to tariffs.

Lutnick then tried to assure that tariffs would drop to zero as countries negotiate deals, but Dean interrupted, emphasizing the current cost burden on American consumers and businesses amid the confusion.

“Mr. Secretary, I believe you know better,” Dean said firmly. “I believe you recognize that a trade deficit isn’t something to fear. Predictability and stability are essential for businesses. I wish you would convey that truth to this administration.” She then yielded back.

Lutnick asked to make a quick comment, and the chairman allowed it. Unfortunately for him, his next words only dug the hole deeper.

“There’s no uncertainty if you build in America and produce your product here—there will be no tariff,” Lutnick said.

Dean fired back immediately: “We can’t produce bananas in America!”

Lutnick insisted, “The concept of building in America and paying no tariff is very clear.”

Dean didn’t miss a beat: “We cannot build bananas in America!” — delivering a perfect soundbite that underscored the absurdity.

Dean’s point is undeniable: applying tariffs to goods the U.S. simply cannot produce only raises prices for hardworking American families. This exchange highlights the confusion and incompetence that continue to plague this administration’s trade policies.
