Mary Trump has issued a warning about what she calls the “fundamental danger” in the way President Donald Trump is handling the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.
Tensions have intensified since Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran last week in an effort to weaken its nuclear capabilities. While Trump has weighed different options for potential U.S. involvement, recent polls show most Americans oppose direct engagement.
The president has called for evacuations from Tehran and demanded Iran’s unconditional surrender. Earlier this week, he left the G7 summit ahead of schedule to meet with his national security team. In response, Iran warned of “irreparable damage” if the U.S. decides to join Israel militarily.
In a Substack post published Wednesday, Mary Trump, the president’s estranged niece, expressed alarm at how he has managed the crisis. She specifically criticized Trump for contradicting testimony from his director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, who told Congress in March that there was no evidence Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons. Nevertheless, on Tuesday, Trump claimed Iran was “very close to having it.”
Mary Trump noted that Gabbard has not publicly commented on whether she supports U.S. intervention or addressed the president’s statements that appear to undermine her prior assessment.
She questioned how the administration could claim to be unified: “If intelligence says one thing and Donald says the opposite thing, how can they be on the same page?”
“I find it deeply troubling that we even have to take such things into consideration,” she wrote. “But one fundamental danger we face in this situation is that the more pushback Donald gets, the more likely he is to double down on his threats. As so often happens, he may escalate talk of war to make himself feel vindicated and to ensure that everyone else looks wrong.”
Though the president has continued to voice strong support for Israel, he has avoided stating outright whether he plans to involve American troops. He has repeated that Iran should have agreed to an earlier deal and insisted it cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Some conservatives typically allied with Trump have warned against dragging the U.S. into another conflict. Several lawmakers are seeking to reclaim Congress’s authority to declare war. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and commentator Tucker Carlson are among those insisting the U.S. stay out, reflecting deep divisions among Republicans on foreign policy.
In response to Mary Trump’s criticism, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told Newsweek: “President Trump is the most informed person on Earth. Meanwhile, Mary Trump is a stone-old loser who doesn’t have a clue about anything. The only foreign policy experience she has is watching MSDNC all day long, warping her grasp of reality. President Trump’s Peace through Strength foreign policy is a tried-and-true approach that keeps America safe and deters global threats. He has full confidence in his entire exceptional national security team.”
The White House also released a statement Tuesday: “President Donald J. Trump has never wavered in his stance that Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon—a pledge he has made repeatedly, both in office and on the campaign trail.”
In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned: “We caution America about the consequences of entering this war. It will suffer severe damage if it does so. War will be met with war, bombing with bombing, and strike with strike.”
Political activist Charlie Kirk commented: “There’s a major schism in the MAGA online community. Our people do not want war. They want their president focused on fixing this country—not fighting someone else’s.”
Whether the U.S. will join Israel in the conflict remains uncertain in the days and weeks ahead.
