Musk On If Trump Should Be Impeached: 'Yes'

Elon Musk Endorses Call for Trump’s Impeachment Amid Growing Rift

Elon Musk publicly backed a call for President Donald Trump’s impeachment on Thursday, signaling a sharp turn in their once cooperative relationship.

The tech billionaire reposted a message on X (formerly Twitter) that read, “Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him.” Musk added a simple affirmation: “Yes.”

This endorsement came just hours after Trump and Musk began trading barbs in an unusually public fallout. Once seen as allies, the two figures are now openly at odds. The timing is notable, as House Democrats have introduced new articles of impeachment against Trump since he began his second term on January 20, 2025.

Their dispute erupted Thursday when Trump expressed “disappointment” in Musk’s criticism of the administration’s budget reconciliation bill. In response, Trump took to Truth Social, stating he didn’t mind Musk’s opposition but added, “He should have done it months ago.”

Musk previously led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a newly formed agency aimed at cutting federal spending. He resigned at the end of May, following increasing friction over the direction of federal budget policy. Since then, he’s attacked the “Big Beautiful Bill,” claiming it betrays the fiscal responsibility he was tasked with championing and would significantly increase the national debt.

Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE implemented several cost-cutting measures, including controversial job reductions and funding reallocations, some of which triggered legal backlash and had to be reversed.

On Thursday, Musk also resurfaced old Trump tweets from the early 2010s, in which Trump criticized Congress for reckless spending. Musk captioned the reposts with a pointed question: “Where did that man go?”

The process of impeaching a president involves a majority vote in the House and a conviction by a two-thirds vote in the Senate following a formal trial. Trump was impeached twice during his first term—first in 2019 over Ukraine-related misconduct, and again in 2021 for inciting the Capitol insurrection. He was acquitted both times by the Senate.

Reacting to the controversy, Trump posted on Truth Social:

“Elon was ‘wearing thin.’ I asked him to leave. I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!”

Meanwhile, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, despite voting for the budget, reinforced her loyalty to Trump. A spokesperson told Newsweek, “There is absolutely no daylight between Congresswoman Greene and President Trump. She has made her position very clear from her personal account.”

Conservative commentator Candace Owens also weighed in on X, writing:

“My favorite part of this is going to be everyone who jumped on me for never joining the Elon-worship party, now do a complete 180. His character was always apparent. You guys were just acting like groupies.”

As tensions escalated late into Thursday night, Musk announced that SpaceX would immediately decommission its program sending astronauts to the International Space Station—another symbolic break from federal partnerships.
