Music icon Neil Young has taken a clever jab at former supporter Donald Trump by inviting him to attend his upcoming tour—just like he did for decades—but with a sharp twist. This move has sparked calls from MAGA supporters to boycott Young’s shows.
On his website, Young expressed concern for the country, writing, “Our nation and the values our ancestors fought for are now under threat from the government. This is not what we voted for. This is the reality we face. Our government is out of control and no longer represents us. This summer, you can stand up for American values, for our children and future generations.”
He continued, “When I tour across the USA this summer, unless martial law is declared—which would make it impossible—let’s unite and stand for these American values.” The comment hinted at fears over Trump’s increasingly authoritarian rule.
Young emphasized, “This won’t be a political rally. We’ll simply be playing the music we love, for all of us to enjoy. President Trump, you’re invited. Come hear our music, just like you did for decades.”
Back in the day, Trump was reportedly a fan of Neil Young’s music before the musician became one of his most vocal critics. In 2008, Trump told Rolling Stone magazine, after being spotted front row at a Young concert, “He’s got something very special. He’s performed at my casinos over the years and always delivers. I’ve met him a few times; he’s a terrific guy.”
In the same recent message, Young also subtly referenced the ongoing clash between Trump and fellow music legend Bruce Springsteen. “Bruce Springsteen and many others will be touring this summer, playing your favorite songs like ‘Born in the USA,’” Young said. “We take pride in who we are, and we must never let the government forget that.”
He signed off with a simple, “Thanks, Neil.”
Just two weeks prior, Young launched a fierce critique of Trump on his website:
“Bruce and thousands of musicians believe you’re destroying America. You worry about that instead of the children dying in Gaza. That’s your problem. I’m not afraid of you, nor are the rest of us. You shut down FEMA when we needed it most—that’s your problem. Stop worrying about what musicians say and start fixing the mess you made.”
Young also called out Trump’s distracted leadership: “Remember what the White House really means? 86/47? That’s what you’re focused on? You’re forgetting your real job—you work for us. Wake up, Republicans! This guy is out of control. We need a real president.”
This harsh criticism came amid Trump’s series of attacks on Springsteen after the singer kicked off his tour by denouncing the current administration as “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous.” Trump retaliated by threatening a “major investigation” into Springsteen for backing Kamala Harris, calling him “highly overrated,” a “pushy, obnoxious jerk,” and a “dried out prune of a rocker.”
Neil Young clearly isn’t backing down from this battle, and neither should we. The future of the country is at stake, and it’s our duty as Americans to stand up loudly against Trump’s harmful agenda every single day.
