Britain has recently provoked outrage in Moscow with its new £70 million missile package for Ukraine.
Russia has threatened retaliation against British citizens and companies after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced that the 350 ASRAAM air defence missiles would be funded using interest accrued on frozen Russian assets held in Western banks.
Starmer underscored the decision by declaring:
“Russia, not Ukraine, should pay the price for Putin’s barbaric and illegal war. It is only right that we use the proceeds from seized Russian funds to provide Ukraine with the air defence it needs.”
In response, one of Vladimir Putin’s chief propagandists, Vladimir Solovyov, issued an explicit threat on his Kremlin-backed primetime television show.
“The British are supplying missiles to Ukraine, and they’re paying for it with our frozen interest. What does that mean? It means all British companies still operating in Russia in any capacity must pay for it—perhaps British citizens as well,” he warned.
Solovyov, often tasked with voicing the Kremlin’s fury, went on to say:
“If we know for a fact that factories are producing weapons for the Ukrainian Nazis to bomb our cities… and the British are making drones, just like the Baltic states, then, following the logic of the Iranian-Israeli conflict, these are all legitimate targets.”
He has repeatedly amplified the false narrative that Ukraine’s government is run by far-right extremists posing a threat to Russia.
The Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAM), also known as the AIM-132, were originally developed for aerial combat but have now been adapted for ground launch from UK-supplied Raven systems—4×4 Supacat trucks equipped with twin missile rails and advanced sensors.
This marks the first time in history that seized Russian funds have been used directly to procure weapons.
The ASRAAM missiles boast a strike rate of 70 to 90 percent against drones, helicopters, loitering munitions, and cruise missiles.
The shipment forms part of Britain’s broader £4.5 billion annual military support package for Ukraine.
