Vice President J.D. Vance was dealt a fresh dose of public embarrassment after it came to light that a Norwegian tourist was detained and denied entry into the United States simply for having an unflattering meme of Vance saved on his phone.
This is a new low, even for MAGA’s thin-skinned paranoia.
“They took me into a room guarded by several armed officers. I had to surrender my shoes, my phone, and my backpack,” said Mads Mikkelsen (not the famous actor) in an interview with his local newspaper, Nordlys.
Mikkelsen recounted what he called an “abuse of power and harassment” at Newark Liberty International Airport, where he had landed en route to visit friends in New York City. From there, he planned to continue to Austin, Texas and later meet his mother to tour U.S. national parks.
Determined to intimidate him, officials subjected Mikkelsen to aggressive questioning about drug smuggling, terrorism, and right-wing extremism—despite having no credible reason to suspect any of it. He was then locked in a holding cell.
“I’d been traveling for twelve hours, hadn’t slept properly, and was already physically and mentally exhausted before they even started,” he said.
Agents then threatened to jail him or fine him $5,000 if he refused to unlock his phone, creating a scene more fitting for an authoritarian regime than a modern democracy. When Mikkelsen finally complied, they discovered the offending meme—a grotesquely distorted caricature of Vance’s face, which went viral after the infamous Oval Office clash between Trump, Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Officials also took issue with an old photo of Mikkelsen holding a handmade wooden pipe.
“Both pictures had automatically saved to my camera roll from a chat app. I never imagined these harmless images could get me barred from the country,” he said.
Despite his explanations that the photos were just jokes, officers subjected him to further searches, took his fingerprints, and even extracted blood samples.
“I felt like I was being treated as a terrorist suspect. I tried to stay calm, but in the end, all I wanted was to go home,” he recalled.
This incident is yet another example of Trump-era officials terrorizing innocent foreign visitors—and it’s precisely this kind of petty, authoritarian behavior that’s driving the collapse of America’s tourism industry. MAGA is turning the country into an international outcast.
