Mary Trump Warns: “We’re in Uniquely Dangerous Times” Under Her Uncle’s Presidency
Psychologist and author Mary Trump issued a stark warning in her latest Substack post, describing America under Donald Trump’s second term as a nation at a “treacherous point in our history.” Known for her outspoken criticism of her uncle, Mary argues that the threat to democracy is not only ongoing—but accelerating.
Despite her alarm, she expressed hope that Democrats still have a meaningful path forward, if they’re willing to take it.
🗳️ Trump’s Return and a GOP Sweep
After winning both the popular vote and the Electoral College in 2024, Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. Republicans flipped the Senate and held onto the House, dealing Democrats a crushing blow and triggering deep internal debates over messaging, strategy, and the party’s identity.
In his first few months back in office, Trump has faced both passionate support and growing legal resistance, as his administration pushes a sweeping executive agenda now under scrutiny from civil liberties groups and constitutional watchdogs.
🧠 Mary Trump: “We Didn’t Do Enough”
Mary Trump opened her recent blog post with a sobering reflection:
“I remain in this fight because it’s necessary.”
She referenced the dread she felt leading up to the 2020 election and her haunting question:
“What if Donald gets a second shot at the presidency?”
Her conclusion is chilling:
“It will be the end of the American experiment.”
She accused her uncle and the Republican Party of being “hellbent on taking away something extraordinarily precious: our democracy—our imperfect, striving-to-be-more-perfect democracy.”
But she didn’t stop there. She also criticized her own side:
“We haven’t done enough to protect it. Our institutions are failing us, in part because we assumed they didn’t need to be defended.”
Mary Trump urged Democrats to stop relying on institutions to save the day, and instead to plan ahead, work strategically, and stay mobilized.
“We all have power. We are on the right side of history. Our anger is righteous—and if we channel it together, we can win.”
🔥 Division and Reflection Inside the Democratic Party
The Democratic Party, still reeling from its 2024 defeat, is now navigating growing tensions between its progressive and centrist wings.
Figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have rallied supporters against Trump’s policies, warning that the U.S. is sliding into an oligarchy. At the same time, leaders like Chuck Schumer have faced backlash for cooperating with Trump-aligned Republicans on budget and infrastructure bills.
Even within Democratic-aligned media and culture, criticism is mounting.
Comedian Bill Maher recently warned:
“If Democratic thought leaders keep embracing the notion that America is cringe… they’re doomed.”
Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) echoed this frustration:
“The Democrats’ brand is really bad. We’re losing the cultural conversation, and ideological purity tests are hurting us.”
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg added:
“We need to stop with the finger-wagging. That’s not how we win people over.”
🗓️ What’s Next? Eyes on 2026 and Beyond
With the 2026 midterms on the horizon, the next two years will test both Trump’s governing approach and the Democrats’ ability to regroup. Many believe the party’s long-term success will depend on finding a balance between principled resistance and effective, inclusive messaging.
Looking ahead to 2028, several prominent Democrats are already being discussed as potential candidates:
Kamala Harris, currently seen as a frontrunner
Gavin Newsom, Governor of California
Pete Buttigieg
And possibly even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, should she choose to run
💬 Mary Trump’s message is simple but urgent: American democracy is still worth fighting for—but only if people stop assuming someone else will save it.

So far, the odds of Democrats turning things around do not look good. The Democratic party is making the same mistakes it has in 2016 and 2024 by not offering an alternative vision, not standing for anything and attacking anyone in the party that does. Their message so far has been a meeker version of, "We aren't as bad as republicans". It looks like the dems would prefer to continue to lose by serving their donors than their base. I hate Democrats just a little less than republicans for the mess they put us all in, hate them!
ReplyDelete...and yet fascist sociopath Trump was elected...twice. Nobody thought that would happen either. Democrats didn't put us "in this mess." The ignorance and utter gullibility of dumb Americans put us here. Hitler wouldn't have gotten as far as he did if the people hadn't actually believed what he was saying. Dems warned MAGAland for years that this would happen and those warnings were ignored in favor of some small-minded, twisted kind of payback mentality and, most of all, FEAR - blind anger and rash, stupid actions come from FEAR. Period. It's astoundingly lazy to blame democrats - most of whom deal in logic and reason - when Republicans deal in fear. Only a handful have EVER stood up to Trump, so terrified of losing their jobs that will say or do anything - whether they believe it or not - to avoid angering a sociopathic child. If that isn't spinelessness, I don't know what is. but worst of all, it's the MAGAland base, they are the responsible ones. Take a look in the mirror...that is who is to blame.
DeleteMary Trump said one thing that no one seems to accept because of the American belief that the USA is exceptionally wonderful ; that the institutions of state have failed. The Supreme Court is meant to be even handed and representative of the people, not loaded up by one particular side. The Constitution is old and needs updating but based on a balance of what the whole country needs not what any particular constituency wants ; in particular it must be based on the assumption that not everyone is honest and loyal and will put the interest of the common good ahead of personal benefit. The present corruption which allows money and wealth to buy senate and representative seats must be controlled, as many other democratic countries have already done. The legal and political system are unfit for purpose in that riches and wealth can misuse the system to avoid paying for their taxes and even avoid the consequences of being found guilty ; too many of the poor go to profit making jails. The idea that small states that contribute little to the modern country get twice the say in election of a President than large powerful modern states is totally inappropriate. The present Presidential system, based essentially on on the assumption that only decent men would ever be representatives of the people needs changing. No country can withstand being led by a criminal and expect to be respected; a simple set of standards needs to be set for those who wish to be elected to lead otherwise charlatans will govern for themselves and not the people.
