As U.S.-Russia tensions continue to escalate, a leading Russian state media figure has issued a stark warning to President Donald Trump—hinting at the possibility of nuclear escalation if Washington doesn’t back down on its support for Ukraine.
Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of the Kremlin-backed broadcaster RT, appeared on the popular state-run talk show Evening with Vladimir Solovyov to criticize Trump and his NATO allies. In a chilling statement, she suggested that only the threat of a nuclear confrontation could halt what she described as Western aggression.
Simonyan said:
“The only thing that can stop them is an imminent threat — a direct, unavoidable danger... And a nuclear threat — anywhere — would be absolutely unacceptable.”
She then referenced a Cold War-era statement that implied the U.S. could be turned into a "strait between two oceans"—an ominous metaphor for complete annihilation. Simonyan concluded, “There will come a time when we'll have to use this threat.”
This rhetoric comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for stalling peace talks with Ukraine. Trump recently warned of “severe” economic consequences if Moscow refuses to agree to a ceasefire within 50 days. In addition to military support for Kyiv, Trump has proposed 100% tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil.
The next round of Ukraine-Russia peace talks is scheduled to take place Wednesday in Istanbul. However, hopes for a breakthrough remain low, especially as Putin has once again sent a low-level delegation led by former culture minister Vladimir Medinsky. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has already said that making real progress would be “difficult.”
In response to Trump's growing pressure campaign, the Kremlin's propaganda machine has gone into overdrive. The latest attacks from figures like Simonyan suggest Moscow is becoming increasingly alarmed by U.S. actions—and willing to escalate threats in return.
Simonyan has already been sanctioned by the U.K., EU, and Ukraine for her role in spreading pro-Kremlin disinformation since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.
While many view her statements as bluster, they highlight the dangerous rhetorical brinkmanship now playing out between two nuclear powers. As diplomatic efforts stall, the world watches with growing concern.
