In a press statement this week, President Donald Trump downplayed public interest in the release of Jeffrey Epstein’s client list, calling it “boring” and blaming the “fake news” media for keeping the story alive.
“It’s sordid, but it’s boring,” Trump said. “And I don’t understand why it keeps going. I think, really, only pretty bad people, including 'fake news,' want to keep something like that going.”
Trump’s comments follow months of controversy within his own MAGA movement. The president had previously promised to declassify Epstein-related files as part of his 2024 campaign platform, sparking widespread support among those who saw it as a key part of his “drain the swamp” rhetoric.
But that support has fractured after Trump’s administration offered conflicting accounts. In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi claimed the client files were “on her desk.” But a recent memo from the DOJ and FBI declared no client list exists and that no further disclosures would be made, citing a lack of legal basis.
Adding fuel to the fire, Elon Musk—once a vocal Trump supporter—accused the president last month of being included in the unreleased Epstein files, further stirring division among Trump’s base.
Recent polling reflects that discontent. Approximately 67% of Trump’s 2020 voters said they disagree with his decision not to release the information. Among potential first-time Trump voters, dissatisfaction climbs to 71%. Even across the broader electorate, 63% of Americans say they are disappointed with how the issue has been handled.
Trump responded to the backlash in a Truth Social post by defending Bondi and attacking some of his own supporters, referring to persistent inquiries into Epstein as “unhelpful” and politically motivated.
The issue has become particularly sensitive due to Trump’s previous connections with Epstein. He appeared on multiple flight logs for Epstein’s private jet in the 1990s and attended several social events with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. During the early 2024 campaign cycle, Trump’s team confirmed that he used Epstein’s jet on occasion when his own plane was grounded.
Despite these revelations, Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing and has said he severed ties with Epstein “long before” the financier’s criminal charges.
For many in Trump’s base, the Epstein case was symbolic of elite corruption. But the DOJ’s July 7 memo stating that no client list exists—and that no further files would be released—has prompted accusations of betrayal and cover-up from longtime supporters.
