Former Ukrainian National Security chief Oleksandr Danylyuk recently made a powerful comparison about the war in Ukraine. In his words, what Ukrainians are experiencing feels like a “large 9/11,” and he argued that Vladimir Putin should face the same fate as Osama Bin Laden.
Speaking with BBC Radio 4, Danylyuk stressed that Russia’s invasion is not just an attack on Ukraine, but a global security crisis. He accused Russian forces of committing war crimes, including the reported use of cluster bombs and so-called “green parrot” bombs near Kharkiv and Ivankiv. He added that these tactics are being used to clear the way for Russian advances, despite the devastating impact on civilians.
When asked whether war crimes are still ongoing, Danylyuk responded firmly that the evidence continues to mount. He urged the international community not to look away, but instead to keep documenting these atrocities so that Putin and those responsible can eventually be held accountable.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already announced an investigation into possible war crimes in Ukraine. Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan confirmed there is a “reasonable basis” to believe such crimes have been committed and pledged to expand the probe as the conflict escalates.
Danylyuk’s remarks also highlight the growing comparisons between Putin and infamous figures like Bin Laden or even Hitler. For many Ukrainians, the scale of destruction and loss feels like an act of global terrorism, not just a conventional war. His call is clear: Putin should one day “share the same destiny” as Osama Bin Laden, who was located and killed by U.S. forces in 2011.
As the war continues, the civilian toll keeps rising. According to the UN, more than 100 Ukrainians were killed in just the first days of the invasion, with numbers still climbing. For Ukrainians like Danylyuk, the world’s response will decide whether justice is served or whether history repeats itself.
