In the aftermath of his summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, President Donald Trump sparked new controversy over his approach to the war in Ukraine.
Instead of continuing to push for a formal ceasefire, Trump suggested he might encourage Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to concede territory to Russia in order to bring an end to the conflict that has dragged on for more than three years.
This idea immediately drew sharp criticism from many observers, who saw it as a concession to Moscow. Trump, however, pushed back on Truth Social, blasting the media for what he called unfair coverage.
“It’s incredible how the Fake News violently distorts the TRUTH when it comes to me. There is NOTHING I can say or do that would lead them to write or report honestly about me,” he posted.
Trump went on to describe his Alaska meeting with Putin as “great,” framing the war as “Biden’s stupid war a war that should have never happened.”
On Monday, Zelensky is expected to join Trump at the White House, alongside several European leaders, to discuss the summit’s outcomes. While Trump claimed “great progress” had been made in talks with Putin, he gave no specifics. His only clear statement to reporters was: “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
The joint appearance with Putin ended abruptly. The two leaders made a short statement but took no questions, leaving journalists and global audiences speculating about what had been discussed behind closed doors.
Critics argue that Trump’s handling of the summit left him looking weaker internationally. At one point, he remained silent while Putin delivered long opening remarks a moment widely interpreted as humiliating. Trump himself admitted before the talks that there was a 25% chance the summit could fail, but the vague outcome left many wondering whether any real progress was made at all.
