A live Fox News broadcast on Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s upcoming summit got off to an awkward start when fill-in anchor Aishah Hasnie fumbled a key detail and was quickly corrected by her co-host.
Trump is scheduled to meet Putin on Friday, August 15, in Alaska. The summit is expected to focus heavily on efforts to end the war in Ukraine, which has now stretched on for more than three years. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on the way to the meeting, Trump said, “The war’s got to stop and the killing’s got to stop.” He also called the United States the “hottest country” in the world economically and claimed Putin “wants a piece of that” because Russia is “not hot, economically.”
When asked about the possibility of territorial concessions, Trump said, “They will be discussed, but I’ve got to let Ukraine make that decision… I’m not here to negotiate for Ukraine.” He hinted at possible U.S. security assurances for Kyiv with a vague “maybe.”
Fox News launched into wall-to-wall coverage of the event, showing live footage of the runway where both leaders would arrive. But Hasnie stumbled as she told viewers Trump believed the summit had only a “25 percent chance of success.”
Her co-anchor John Roberts quickly corrected her: “I think you got that backward. It’s a 75 percent chance of success… 25 percent of failure.” Hasnie quickly agreed and moved on, while Roberts reminded viewers that both leaders would hold a joint press conference later in the day.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian state media that the summit was expected to last six to seven hours, including a working lunch and a bilateral meeting. Fox’s Bret Baier also previewed an upcoming interview with Trump aboard Air Force One, where the president said: “I think it’s going to work out very well, and if it doesn’t, I’m going to head back home real fast.”
Whether the meeting produces any meaningful progress on Ukraine remains to be seen.
