Recent reports suggest that Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, may have misread key Russian demands — an awkward situation for the White House.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sent a direct and uncompromising message to Trump regarding proposals for a peace deal. Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Alaska next Friday, part of his push to end the war in Ukraine.
Last week, Trump hinted that Ukraine might have to give up some territory as part of an agreement. Sources told CBS that his plan could involve allowing Russia to keep Crimea and the entire Donbas region, while Russia would return the occupied parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
Zelensky reacted sharply, making it clear that Ukraine will not surrender any land in exchange for peace. Writing on his official Telegram channel, he stressed that Ukraine is ready to work toward “a lasting peace” — but not at the cost of its territorial integrity.
“The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question is already in our Constitution,” Zelensky said. “No one will, and no one can, deviate from this. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier. Ukraine is ready for real solutions that can bring peace. But any decisions made against Ukraine, or without Ukraine, are decisions against peace.”
He then issued a pointed warning to Trump: “These are dead solutions.”
Meanwhile, the German newspaper Bild reports that the Kremlin has no plans to withdraw from Kherson or Zaporizhzhia. In fact, Moscow is reportedly still demanding full control over all five contested regions: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea.
A Ukrainian official told Bild, “Witkoff doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” suggesting that the envoy’s understanding of Russia’s position is deeply flawed.
