Prime Minister Keir Starmer has flown to Washington, D.C., where he’s taking part in peace talks alongside U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and other European leaders.
Starmer appeared live on BBC Breakfast during his trip, but things got a little awkward when he was asked how he felt watching Vladimir Putin receive a red-carpet welcome during his recent visit with Trump in Alaska. Instead of giving a direct answer, Starmer sidestepped the question. His response focused instead on supporting Trump’s efforts to reach a long-term peace deal in the ongoing conflict.
He said:
“I support President Trump’s efforts to bring about a lasting outcome and peaceful settlement of this conflict that’s been going on for over three years now… Today has shown that we have moved forward, and that in the end for me has always been the test, are we making real progress?”
The comment didn’t touch on the red carpet at all, which made him sound careful and perhaps rehearsed.
Meanwhile, Putin’s arrival in the U.S. was marked with military pageantry: a handshake with Trump, photos on the runway, and even a flyover of American fighter jets and a stealth bomber. Reporters called out questions, including one about civilian casualties, but Putin ignored them.
Back on the BBC interview, Starmer emphasized unity among the leaders at the White House, highlighting steps forward on security guarantees and diplomatic cooperation. He also underlined that territorial decisions must remain in Ukraine’s hands, stressing the principle of “no decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine.”
He wrapped up his comments by saying:
“If you judge this on what the outcomes are today, this is good, this is productive… Roll your sleeves up, do the hard work, prepare for the right outcomes, and today I’m really pleased.”
It was a polished performance, but many noticed how carefully he avoided giving a personal reaction to Putin’s red-carpet treatment.
