Kyiv has once again faced a devastating assault as Russia launched a large-scale aerial attack using both missiles and drones. The strike claimed the lives of at least eight people, including a 14-year-old girl and another child, while injuring 38 others, according to Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
Explosions lit up the night sky as ammunition rained down across 20 districts of the Ukrainian capital. A five-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district was hit directly, causing severe destruction. “Everything is destroyed,” reported Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration.
In central Kyiv, shattered glass covered major streets after the bombardment, forcing residents to rush into metro stations for safety. Many people spent the night sheltering underground, some wrapped in sleeping bags while others clutched their pets.
This strike marks the first major combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv since Donald Trump’s recent meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault, saying it proved Moscow’s unwillingness to pursue peace.
“Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table,” Zelensky said in a statement on X. He called for stronger international sanctions and urged China to respond, reminding that Beijing has previously advocated for a ceasefire and avoiding further escalation.
The attack came just hours after China confirmed that Vladimir Putin will attend a military parade in Beijing next week alongside President Xi Jinping.
