Russian Media Publishes Disturbing Op-Ed as Global Tensions Rise

A recent article published by Russian state-owned media outlet RIA Novosti has sparked international outrage for its violent and dehumanizing rhetoric against Ukrainians. The op-ed, written by commentator Kirill Strelnikov, included disturbing statements suggesting that “no one should be left alive in Ukraine.”

In the piece, Strelnikov referred to Ukrainian soldiers as “laboratory rats” and mocked their military sacrifices, suggesting they were ready to die for what he sarcastically called “the best army in the world.” The writer also made a grotesque remark stating there was “no need for lacy underwear for the dead,” further underscoring the brutal tone of the article.

According to reports from the Kyiv Independent, the column echoed the Kremlin’s long-standing narrative that Ukraine is merely a proxy in a larger geopolitical struggle—describing it as a “military testing ground” for the West and a pawn of the United States and Europe.

This rhetoric comes at a time of heightened concern about global instability, especially following the circulation of an unverified map online claiming to show U.S. regions most at risk in the event of a nuclear conflict—a claim not backed by official government sources but fueling fear nonetheless.

Trump Responds to Russian Rhetoric

The op-ed coincided with a tense exchange between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Dmitry Medvedev, former President of Russia and a current ally of Vladimir Putin.

Medvedev criticized Trump’s recent ultimatum toward Russia regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. In a statement, Medvedev suggested that Trump's stance was pushing the situation toward a broader conflict, not only with Ukraine but potentially involving the U.S. directly. “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step toward war,” Medvedev said, warning Trump not to follow the path of President Joe Biden.

Trump responded strongly via his social platform Truth Social, dismissing Medvedev’s warnings and making pointed remarks about both Russia and India. He criticized India’s high tariffs and downplayed the economic ties between the U.S. and both countries. He also labeled Medvedev a “failed former president” and warned him to “watch his words,” adding that the Russian official was “entering very dangerous territory.”

Despite the fiery exchange, Trump has recently suggested he is working toward brokering a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, though no formal negotiations have been publicly confirmed.
