On August 26, Fox News unexpectedly paused its coverage of President Donald Trump’s National Guard deployment plans to share a very different kind of “breaking news” the engagement of Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.
During an America Reports segment, anchors John Roberts and Sandra Smith stopped their discussion on Trump’s policies when Roberts announced:
“How about this one, Sandra? It appears that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are now engaged to be married.”
Fans react online
Swifties immediately took over social media, celebrating the surprise update. One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Taylor Swift is now the #1 news item and Trump can’t compete with her news.”
Another added:
“Thank you Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift (congratulations)! For pushing Trump out of today’s headlines even if just for a moment!”
Some even joked that Trump might be frustrated to see Swift’s engagement dominate the spotlight.
Trump’s response
Interestingly, when asked about the news at a press briefing, Trump chose not to reignite his long-running feud with the pop star. Instead, he offered congratulations:
“I think he’s a great player, a great guy. She’s a terrific person. I wish them a lot of luck.”
How their romance began
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s love story has been building for more than two years. It first sparked in July 2023, when Kelce admitted on his New Heights podcast that he had tried to connect with Taylor during her Eras Tour.
By late summer, rumors swirled that they were spending more time together. The speculation was confirmed this year when Kelce posted a carousel of photos on Instagram, showing the two smiling together. He captioned it:
“Had some adventures this offseason, kept it 💯.”
Now, after months of public appearances and growing fan support, the couple has officially taken the next step an engagement that captured headlines, even overshadowing Trump’s political updates.
