Russian state media wasted no time mocking Donald Trump after his recent meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
The summit, held on Friday, August 14, was framed as a critical step toward peace in Ukraine. Trump had expressed confidence beforehand, even telling reporters he believed there was a “very good chance” of moving closer to a ceasefire. But despite the buildup, no agreement was reached, and the talks ended much earlier than expected.
The atmosphere afterward quickly shifted. On the Russian radio program In Detail, host Ivan Kamenev and TV commentator Alexander Gurnov openly ridiculed Trump while celebrating Putin’s “victories.” Gurnov highlighted small details like Trump’s habit of pulling on handshakes, suggesting Putin’s refusal to bend showed strength and preparation. He went on to argue that Trump had been intimidated, noting the shift from plans for a one-on-one meeting to a more cautious three-on-three format.
Gurnov claimed that with Putin’s political skill, intellect, and diplomatic instincts, only China’s Xi Jinping could compare. In his telling, Trump avoided a direct confrontation because he feared being outmaneuvered.
While Trump later described the meeting as “extremely productive,” it lasted under three hours instead of the seven originally scheduled. Both leaders issued short, pre-written statements, but neither took questions from the press. Trump emphasized that progress had been made, though “sticking points” remained. Putin, for his part, insisted Russia wants peace but stressed that Ukraine and its allies must avoid provocations that could derail any fragile progress.
In short, the summit was billed as historic, but it ended with more symbolism than substance and plenty of gloating from Russian propagandists.
