President Donald Trump recently claimed that Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised him during the Army-Navy football game in December 2024, allegedly saying:
"Sir, you’re the greatest president of my lifetime."
Trump added that Moore hugged him, shook his hand, and even wished the compliment could be made public.
But Governor Wes Moore, a 46-year-old Democrat and decorated U.S. Army veteran, strongly disputed that version of events. Speaking on CNN with Kaitlan Collins, Moore said:
“I know this is breaking news to everybody, but the president is not telling the truth.”
Moore clarified that his conversation with Trump focused on the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse near Baltimore and Maryland’s swift recovery efforts not on complimenting Trump’s presidency. Moore emphasized that he never called Trump “the greatest,” calling the claim “absolutely comical.”
He also noted that he declined Trump’s invitation to sit together, choosing instead to remain with military cadets and midshipmen.
Gavin Newsom seizes the moment
California Governor Gavin Newsom quickly used the incident to troll Trump online. Known for his sharp social media game, Newsom posted memes, AI-generated images, and even launched satirical merchandise through his “Patriot Shop.” Items include Trump-style hats rebranded with slogans like “NEWSOM WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING” and even $100 parody Bibles.
Newsom also shared content poking fun at Trump’s alleged memory lapses, hinting at broader concerns about the former president’s cognitive health.
Renewed focus on Trump’s health
This dispute comes as Trump faces renewed questions about his mental sharpness and physical stamina. Critics point to moments like:
His rambling comments about “violent fish.”
His unusual walk during a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he appeared to weave and drift across a red carpet.
Clinical psychologists such as Dr. John Gartner and Dr. Harry Segal, who host the program Shrinking Trump, have highlighted signs of possible cognitive decline, though they stress that no formal diagnosis can be made without medical evaluation.
According to Dr. Gartner, Trump’s motor performance appears to be deteriorating, a pattern sometimes linked to dementia. Dr. Segal added that Trump’s gait doesn’t resemble intoxication but rather difficulty controlling one leg.
The political back-and-forth
The White House pushed back at Democratic criticism, with spokeswoman Abigail Jackson remarking:
“If Democrats spent half as much time addressing crime in their cities as they did going on cable news to complain about President Trump, their residents would be a lot safer.”
