Trump Revokes Harris' Secret Service Protection

President Donald Trump has officially revoked extended Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris. According to a directive dated Thursday, the Secret Service must end all security measures for Harris beyond what is required by law, effective September 1, 2025.

Under federal law, former presidents receive lifetime Secret Service protection. By contrast, former vice presidents only receive six months of protection after leaving office. Before leaving the White House, President Joe Biden had quietly approved an extension granting Harris an additional year of security. Trump’s new order cancels that extension.

This decision comes just as Harris prepares for a nationwide book tour tied to the release of her memoir. The timing has raised concerns about whether local law enforcement and state officials can provide adequate protection during her high-profile travel schedule.

What Does the Revocation Mean for Harris’ Safety?

  • Loss of Federal Threat Monitoring: Harris will no longer benefit from continuous federal threat intelligence and analysis.
  • End of Home Security Coverage: The Secret Service will also stop monitoring her Los Angeles residence.
  • Shift to State and Local Protection: California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have both expressed concern that state and local agencies will now bear the financial and logistical burden of ensuring her safety.

Mayor Karen Bass criticized the move, calling it “another act of political retaliation” and warning that it could put Harris in real danger.

How Long Do Former Vice Presidents Get Secret Service Protection?

By law, a former vice president receives six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. Any extensions require presidential approval. Biden granted one to Harris, but Trump has now revoked it.

This means that beginning in September, Harris will either need state-funded protection or private security, especially since she will be making public appearances across the country.

Will Harris Have Security During Her Book Tour?

Even without federal protection, Harris is unlikely to travel unprotected. Her team is already coordinating with California officials and likely exploring private security options. Still, the absence of federal-level intelligence and resources makes the situation more complicated and politically charged.
