Vladimir Putin 'Got Everything He Wanted' at Trump Alaska Summit—Senator

When Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, appeared on Meet the Press last Sunday, he didn’t mince words about the Trump-Putin summit that had just wrapped up in Alaska. He called it a “disaster” and “an embarrassment for the United States,” arguing that Vladimir Putin walked away with everything he wanted while Donald Trump got nothing concrete in return.

The meeting lasted about two and a half hours, and though it was framed around the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine, no deal was reached. The event itself was wrapped in pageantry a red-carpet ceremony, a gift to Putin, a military flyover, and even the two leaders sharing a ride in Trump’s armored limousine. Despite the show, there was no breakthrough, and the two did not take questions afterward.

Before the talks, Trump told Fox News he would consider the meeting a failure if he didn’t secure a deal. By that definition, it was. Putin left saying the summit was “constructive and useful,” while Trump walked away without progress on a ceasefire, peace agreement, or sanctions. Senator Murphy pointed out that Putin “didn’t have to give up anything” and yet still got the legitimacy of standing alongside the U.S. president on American soil.

Murphy was especially critical of the symbolism, noting that Putin has been accused of war crimes, including deliberately targeting civilians and abducting children. He said, “War criminals are not normally invited to the United States of America.” From his perspective, Putin got what he wanted most: a photo op that absolved him in the eyes of some and projected strength back home.

Other Democrats were also quick to criticize. Senator Adam Schiff questioned Trump’s willingness to take Putin at his word, even when Putin suggested the 2020 U.S. election was rigged in Trump’s favor. Schiff called Trump “gullible,” pointing out that Putin was simply telling him what he wanted to hear.

Trump, for his part, pushed back on Truth Social, saying the media had distorted the outcome of what he described as “a great meeting” about “Biden’s stupid war.” He has also floated the idea of bringing both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky together for a trilateral summit, something that could come up when Zelensky visits the White House along with European leaders.

Putin has already extended an invitation for Trump to visit Moscow, suggesting that further talks are likely. Whether they will produce results or more photo ops is still an open question.
